World Environmental Education Day 2026
Education for a Changing World
14 October 2026 – Join the global celebration of environmental education!
World Environmental Education Day is approaching! On 14 October 2026, environmental educators, schools, universities, organisations, institutions, museums, protected areas and communities around the world will come together to celebrate the vital role of environmental education in shaping a more sustainable, resilient and equitable future.
The date recalls the opening, on 14 October 1977, of the UNESCO-UNEP Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education in Tbilisi, Georgia. The conference, which continued until 26 October, marked a major milestone in the development of environmental education worldwide and produced principles and recommendations that remain highly relevant today.
Nearly fifty years later, the challenges facing our planet have become increasingly complex and interconnected. Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion and social inequalities require not only technological and political responses, but also a profound transformation in the way people understand their relationship with the environment and with one another.
This is where environmental education plays a crucial role.
Education can turn awareness into action
World Environmental Education Day is an opportunity to highlight the power of education to develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to navigate a rapidly changing world. Environmental education helps people understand complexity and interconnections, question established behaviours, develop critical thinking, participate in their communities and become active protagonists of change.
It takes place everywhere: in classrooms and universities, in parks and museums, in communities and workplaces, through scientific research, cultural initiatives, outdoor activities and countless local projects.
For this reason, the whole month of October can become a global month of environmental education.
